Iowa Interstate Named Most Dangerous Road in the U.S. for Winter Holiday Travel

(Des Moines, IA) — A major Iowa highway is being labeled the most hazardous road in the country for winter holiday travel. According to fleet management tech firm Samsara, Interstate 80 in Iowa tops the list after experiencing a 625% spike in winter crashes.

Key crash hotspots include West Des Moines, Iowa City, and the Missouri River crossing in Council Bluffs, the report found.

Samsara’s analysis shows that nearly half of all traffic accidents occur during afternoon and evening commutes, with nighttime posing an even greater risk due to poor visibility, dropping temperatures, black ice, and driver fatigue. In addition, anonymized data from Allstate’s mobile app indicates that phone use behind the wheel jumps 10% on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and on the Sunday when many travelers head home.

This year, AAA predicts a record 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between November 25 and December 1. About 73 million of those travelers are expected to drive — a number that could rise even higher as some people avoid airports following the recent shutdown.
