A grieving mother is searching for answers after her son was killed in a hit-and-run in south suburban Elwood.
The crash happened on Nov. 24 along Route 53 near Tehle Road. Illinois State Police said 25-year-old De’Avion Smith was riding his bicycle when he was struck. He wasn’t found until the next morning.
“I can’t accept that he’s really gone,” said his mother, Tashondra Smith. “It hurts, it really, really hurts.”
She described De’Avion as full of life—the oldest of four, someone who loved dancing and basketball, and a young man whose faith anchored him. He was active in his Joliet church and known for the close relationship he had with God.
Smith said her son worked two jobs and had resorted to biking to work after his car broke down. Police believe the driver who hit him was heading south on Route 53 between 6 and 6:30 p.m.
“What are we doing? What is society coming to when we won’t even stop and render aid when we know we’ve hurt someone?” she said.
Investigators say the suspect vehicle is possibly a black 2007–2013 Chevrolet Silverado. A headlight and part of a bumper were recovered at the scene.
“Riding your bicycle shouldn’t cost you your life,” she said. “The fact that it cost my son his life is very tragic.”
As the investigation continues, the community is rallying around the family. Second Baptist Church, where De’Avion played drums and was a beloved member for at least two years, is hosting a basketball fundraiser to support them.
His former coach, Juan Davis, broke down in tears remembering him. “He was so respectful … always respectful to me, always.”
Pastor Larry Tyler is urging the responsible driver to come forward. “Do the right thing,” he said.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to contact them. An online fundraiser has already collected more than $3,000 for the family.
