A routine traffic stop in Coral Springs led to the arrest of a heavily armed man accused of trafficking large amounts of fentanyl, one of the deadliest drugs in circulation.
According to the Coral Springs Police Department, the incident occurred on September 25, when officers noticed a black Chevrolet Avalanche parked at a Mobil gas station on West Atlantic Boulevard. A records check revealed the vehicle’s owner, Ryan Eugene Cohee, 42, of Davie, had a suspended driver’s license.
When Cohee left the station, officers followed and later stopped him near Southgate Boulevard and Pine Island Road after clocking the vehicle at 46 mph in a 40 mph zone.
Police said they smelled cannabis and saw a burning joint in plain view. Cohee admitted to having medical marijuana but failed to show a valid card.
A K-9 unit was brought in and alerted to the vehicle, leading officers to a hidden compartment under the center console. Inside, they found a fully loaded Taurus 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and ammunition.
Detectives also discovered a tactical backpack containing a digital scale, pill bottles in Cohee’s name, and a clear bag with 25 grams of fentanyl, confirmed through lab testing.
Court records show Cohee has eight prior felony convictions and is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
He was arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail, where he remains held without bond.
