Man accused of shooting girlfriend near West Miami, leaving her critically injured

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Police arrested a man after investigators said he admitted to shooting his girlfriend of three years, leaving her in critical condition Friday morning near West Miami.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. in the 6700 block of Southwest 13th Terrace in the unincorporated Coral Terrace area, just outside West Miami city limits.

Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the victim and her boyfriend, 31-year-old Giovanni Javier Echevarria, were lying together in his bedroom when an argument broke out and turned physical.

Investigators said Echevarria then grabbed a gun and shot the victim in the chest.

According to the report, the victim managed to call 911 and told dispatchers, “he shot me in the chest.” She also said, “We were in an argument but not like that.”

Deputies said the victim suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and left buttock.

Authorities said she was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in critical but stable condition. She was later intubated and placed in intensive care.

After questioning, detectives said Echevarria admitted he argued with the victim and pointed the gun at his own head in an attempt to take his life.

Investigators said the victim tried to take the gun away, and during the struggle, Echevarria struck her in the stomach with the weapon before shooting her again.

Police said they confiscated the gun along with a shell casing and a projectile.

Jail records show Echevarria is charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm.

As of Saturday, he remained held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Police have not released details about what initially sparked the argument between the suspect and the victim.
