A man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Maurice Harrison, known online as Girlalala, a transgender TikTok influencer and popular Pompano Beach hairstylist. Harrison had more than 235,000 TikTok followers and tens of thousands more on Instagram.
Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said 25-year-old Shanoyd Whyte Jr. is charged with first-degree murder. Deputies responded to the 3300 block of Northwest 37th Street around 7 p.m. Friday and found Harrison in the front seat of a vehicle with gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
Whyte Jr. was detained at the scene, and deputies found a firearm. Investigators said he and Harrison had been arguing in his car when the confrontation turned physical before the shooting. Whyte Jr. told detectives they had been in a relationship for several years.
Surveillance video captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing Whyte Jr. stepping out of the car holding what appears to be a gun, with Harrison leaning from the passenger side. The footage shows him placing her back into the vehicle.
Following the news, social media users resurfaced past videos that suggested ongoing conflict between the pair, including one where Harrison appeared with facial injuries and claimed they “always fight.”
Whyte Jr. appeared in court and was ordered held without bond. Records show he formerly played as a defensive lineman for Bethune-Cookman University.
