Man Sentenced to 55 Years for First-Degree Murder in Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) – A judge sentenced Derrick B. Nephew Jr. to 55 years in prison for the shooting death of Omari Braxton, 21, of Rock Island.

A jury found Nephew guilty of first-degree murder on June 6 after a four-day trial, according to court records. Police said Braxton died on May 11 from a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers arrested Nephew on May 12 in Davenport on a first-degree murder warrant. He had pleaded not guilty in 2024.
