A man and woman were killed, and one person is in custody after a double stabbing at a Bethpage deli on Thursday morning.
Police responded to a 911 call just after 9 a.m. at the A & A Italian Deli & Pizza on Hicksville Road.
Witnesses told Eyewitness News the victims were an elderly couple, a 62-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, who owned and operated the deli, which has served the community for more than 30 years.
A witness told police that one of the couple’s sons was inside the deli and stabbed them.
“This is the worst thing that ever happened to me in my lifetime, and I’m 97 years old,” said witness Joe Boros.
Boros said the couple’s son showed no emotion and admitted to what happened.
“I just saw the son walking out and he said ‘I just stabbed my parents,’ and that was it,” Boros said.
Another witness said the suspect did not run or resist when confronted by police.
“He’s just sitting there, he didn’t run, didn’t put up a fight, nothing,” said witness Brandon James. “I just saw bloody hands when they turned him around. That was all.”
The 62-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 70-year-old man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Officials said the 30-year-old suspect was arrested without incident.
As news of the tragedy spread, the community was left stunned.
“They were just hard-working people, a staple in this neighborhood for so long. It’s crazy to believe they’re not here anymore,” customer Diane Elder said.
No one knows what may have led to the family tragedy. Customers said if their son struggled with emotional issues, no one had any idea.
“She’s just a nice lady. When I found out what happened, I started crying because I felt so bad for them, because they’re such a sweet family,” James said.
The identities of the victims and the suspect have not been released.
No charges have been officially filed.
