A Winter Weather Advisory continues in force for sections of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia tonight due to freezing rain and mixed precipitation, making travel dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, freezing rain and mixed precipitation will persist into the late evening and overnight, resulting in ice accumulations ranging from a light glaze to one-tenth of an inch. Even minor amounts of ice are likely to make roads, bridges, and sidewalks extremely slick, particularly on untreated surfaces.
Washington County, Central and Eastern Allegany County, Frederick County, Carroll County, Northern Baltimore County, Northwest Howard County, Cecil County, and Harford County are examples of Maryland advisory regions. Eastern and Western Mineral Counties in West Virginia continue to be under advisory.
The advisory’s expiry time varies by region, with some sections ending at 11 p.m. Friday, some at midnight, and portions of northeastern Maryland extending until 3 a.m. Saturday. The Ice Storm Warning for Extreme Western Allegany County has been lifted, but a Winter Weather Advisory continues in effect due to persistent freezing rain.
The National Weather Service advises that icy conditions may linger even after precipitation has ended, particularly overnight while temperatures remain near or below freezing.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, leave additional stopping distance, and exercise caution, especially on bridges and high roadways. Residents are asked to call 511 to check local traffic conditions and to be prepared for isolated power outages where ice builds.
