Massachusetts Weather Alert: Freezing Fog Creates Slick Roads In Boston This Morning

Headlights shine softly through patches of icy fog as the morning commute begins in eastern Massachusetts. Pavement appears dry in places, but concealed slick sections persist, particularly on bridges and untreated roadways in Boston.

The National Weather Service predicts intermittent freezing fog throughout the morning. Visibility may quickly deteriorate in low-lying regions, while temperatures hover in the upper 20s. Even a brief fog can coat surfaces with a thin glaze, posing a subtle but severe traffic risk.

Conditions improve later today when the fog clears and the clouds thin. Temperatures rise into the upper 40s, melting any early frosty patches. The roads improve by afternoon; however, soggy spots may remain in shaded areas.

The focus then moves to the weekend. Rain begins Saturday afternoon and grows more consistent into Saturday night. While rainfall remains light, soggy pavement will dominate travel throughout Boston and the surrounding areas. If you’re driving later Saturday, allow extra time, particularly on I-93, Route 1, and city arterials.

Sunday is moist for much of the day, with rain easing off late. High temperatures hit the low 40s before cooler air arrives Sunday night. As the skies clear, temperatures fall below freezing. Any remaining moisture may refreeze quickly, increasing the risk of black ice through early Monday.

Meteorologists add that, while snow chances remain low for Boston this weekend, the pattern favors winter dangers associated with timing. Even in the absence of snow, wet roads and dropping temperatures can cause complications.

Slow down this morning in fog-prone locations. When temps drop Saturday night and Sunday night, proceed with caution.
