Math Teacher Arrested After K-9 Detects Cocaine at Louisiana Middle School

A math intervention teacher at a Baton Rouge middle school was arrested after a random drug search allegedly uncovered cocaine in her bag and marijuana in her car, police said.

Virginia Somers, 47, who works at Westdale Middle School, was taken into custody Tuesday after a K-9 with the East Baton Rouge Parish School Drug Task Force alerted officers to her belongings, according to a probable cause report reviewed by Law&Crime.

The dog, named Vimsen, signaled that something was suspicious in Somers’ book bag. When an officer inspected the bag and then her wallet, he reportedly found a substance later field-tested as cocaine.

Somers allegedly told police the cocaine belonged to a friend but admitted she “did snort” it at a tailgate party outside a Louisiana State University football game the previous weekend, the affidavit stated.

Officers then asked to search her Honda CR-V, and Somers consented. Inside the glove compartment, they allegedly discovered marijuana, two marijuana pipes, lighters, and a small gray bag. In total, police said they confiscated 0.8 grams of cocaine and 0.5 grams of marijuana.

Somers faces charges of possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violating controlled dangerous substances laws in a school zone. She was scheduled to make her first court appearance Wednesday.

Following the arrest, the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System released a statement obtained by local CBS affiliate WAFB saying the district does not condone such behavior and remains committed to maintaining a “safe, secure, and drug-free environment” for all students and staff.
