Mattoon teenager accused of stabbing mother’s boyfriend during argument

MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — A 17-year-old was arrested in Mattoon over the weekend after allegedly stabbing his mother’s boyfriend during an argument that turned violent.

The incident happened Sunday morning at a home near Marion Avenue and 5th Place. Mattoon Police Chief Sam Gaines said the teen had recently moved to Mattoon after living with his aunt in Texas. The household also included his mother’s boyfriend.

Gaines said that around 9 a.m., the teen and his mother got into what he described as a “typical domestic argument.” The argument escalated, and the teen began hitting his mother. When the boyfriend intervened and grabbed the teen, Gaines said the teen pulled a knife and stabbed the man five times in the arm and once in the abdomen.

One of the wounds was “fairly serious,” cutting the boyfriend’s brachial artery and requiring surgery to repair the damage, according to Gaines.

The teen’s mother also suffered a cut to the chin, which Gaines said appeared inadvertent. She later told police she didn’t remember being hit or cut before the stabbing occurred.

The teen was arrested on a charge of aggravated domestic battery and booked into the Vermilion County Juvenile Detention Center, where he remains pending a court appearance scheduled for Friday.
