Mechanic Quotes Woman Nearly $3,000 for Suspension Repair, but Her $50 Fix Has TikTok Furious

A TikTok creator turned a steep $2,800 car repair estimate into a $50 DIY fix thanks to help from ChatGPT — and the internet can’t stop talking about it. The user, @everything_bylaneise, who calls herself a young Martha Stewart, went viral after revealing how she avoided an expensive suspension repair on her Honda Accord.

According to Motor1, a mechanic told her she needed nearly $3,000 in repairs. Instead of agreeing to the price, she asked ChatGPT for guidance. The AI suggested she get a replacement part from a junkyard for about $50 — saving her about $2,750.

“Mechanic told me $2,800 to fix my suspension,” she wrote in her video. “ChatGPT told me junk yard $50. Let’s go fix this mess.”

A big win for DIY repair culture

Although she had never done this type of car repair before, she wasn’t new to hands-on work. She told followers she works as an electrician and already had the tools she needed. She filmed herself installing the suspension part and appeared to complete the job without major issues — a moment many viewers saw as a victory for DIY culture.

But, as expected with car repair content on TikTok, the critics arrived quickly. Her video reached more than 571,300 views, and many commenters — mostly men — questioned her technique and raised safety concerns. This isn’t unusual on the platform, where car-related videos often spark debate.

In her follow-up clip, she shut down the criticism. She showed that she did, in fact, use a jack stand and placed a tire under the frame for extra safety.

“If you gonna try to ‘help’ maybe adjust your tone,” she said. “Especially when you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

TikTok’s newer watermarking system pushed her content to an even wider audience, adding fuel to the reaction.

Despite the negativity, many viewers supported her for proving women can handle repairs themselves. “Hell yeah get it sis,” one person wrote. “You just inspired me to show my repairs online. I feel like we can show them women can do all these things as well.” Another simply added: “Proud of you.”
