Miami-Dade deputies say men shot off-duty officers with paintball gun

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two men accused of shooting three off-duty law enforcement officers with a paintball gun.

Deputies said Miguel Almanza, 18, and Brandon Unzueta, 19, fired at the officers from a gray moving truck on Dec. 20 near Homestead Air Reserve Base.

According to investigators, the three officers were running together near Southwest 312 Street and 137 Avenue. One of the victims was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the incident.

Deputies located and arrested Almanza and Unzueta about 15 minutes later near the Florida Turnpike overpass at Southwest 112 Avenue.

Almanza faces three counts of shooting or throwing a deadly missile. He appeared in court on Dec. 21, where a judge set his bond at $22,500.

Unzueta faces six charges, including three counts of shooting or throwing a deadly missile and three counts of battery. A judge also set his bond at $22,500 during his Dec. 21 court appearance.

Court records show both men are scheduled for arraignment at 9 a.m. on Feb. 18 before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer.
