Midwest Winter Weather Advisory: Freezing Rain To Impact Friday Morning Travel In Indiana, Michigan, And Ohio

Drivers in northern Indiana, southern Michigan, and northwest Ohio should brace themselves for treacherous travel conditions early Friday, when freezing rain begins before sunrise, potentially disrupting the morning commute.

The National Weather Service Northern Indiana has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas of LaGrange and Steuben counties in Indiana, St. Joseph, Branch, and Hillsdale counties in Michigan, and Williams and Fulton counties in Ohio, from 3 a.m. to noon Friday.

Forecasters forecast freezing rain to produce up to one-tenth of an inch of ice, making roads, bridges, and overpasses slippery. Even a light glazing can dramatically enhance the risk of a collision, especially during the early morning driving window when temperatures are below freezing.

Angola, LaGrange, Coldwater, Hillsdale, Sturgis, Bryan, Wauseon, and the adjacent rural communities might all be hit. The caution coincides with the Friday morning commute, when untreated roadways can rapidly become treacherous.

The National Weather Service predicts hazardous travel conditions, particularly on secondary roads and high surfaces. In addition to traffic issues, isolated power outages cannot be ruled out if ice forms on power wires and trees.

Drivers are advised to slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid rapid braking. Residents should exercise caution when walking on sidewalks, steps, and driveways that may become icy.

Motorists are reminded to check real-time road conditions by dialing 511 for their state and to keep alert for updated advisories as conditions change throughout the morning.
