Minnesota Weather Alert: Snow and Freezing Rain Expected Jan. 12–16

An active winter trend may bring many rounds of snow and freezing rain to Minnesota next week, increasing the risk of slick roads and slow travel from Monday to Friday.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, much of Minnesota is predicted to receive above-normal precipitation from January 12 to 16, with temperatures trending above seasonal averages. That configuration accommodates wetter snow and periods of mixed precipitation, particularly during overnight hours and system transitions.

Northern and central Minnesota, including Duluth, Brainerd, and Bemidji, may receive the most snow, while southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities may have a combination of snow, sleet, and brief freezing rain. During more intense bursts, major arteries such as I-94, I-35, and Highway 52 may experience fast changes.

Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation normally advise drivers to allow extra travel time, slow down on untreated roads, and regularly monitor road conditions during protracted winter events. Residents should prepare for slick walkways and keep their vehicles loaded with winter safety materials.

The unstable pattern may extend until midweek, prompting new advisories or winter weather alerts as specifics become clearer. Travelers in Minnesota should prepare for changing circumstances through Friday.
