Mississippians Urged to Switch to Direct Deposit Before Sept. 30

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that starting September 30, most federal benefit payments will no longer be issued by paper check. Recipients will need to receive payments electronically.

Those who currently get Social Security, veterans’ benefits, or other federal payments by paper check should switch to direct deposit. Electronic payments are faster, safer, and protect recipients from lost or stolen checks. If you already use direct deposit, no action is needed.

How to Switch:

  • Sign up for direct deposit through your local bank.

  • Call the federal agency that issues your benefits and follow their instructions.

  • Enroll online at GoDirect.gov to start receiving electronic payments.

To enroll, you will need your Social Security number, information from your most recent federal benefit check or claim number, and your bank’s routing number, account number, and account type.

Those without a bank account can open one at a local bank or credit union, or use a Direct Express Mastercard by calling the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at 1-877-874-6347.

Banks across Mississippi are ready to assist with opening accounts, setting up direct deposits, and offering options.

“Mail and check fraud has been an increasing concern in recent years, and direct deposit gives Mississippians peace of mind, knowing their benefits are safe and available on time every month,” said Gordon Fellows, president and CEO of the Mississippi Bankers Association. “We encourage everyone still receiving a paper check to make the switch before the Sept. 30 deadline. Mississippi’s bankers are happy to help anyone affected by this change receive their benefits electronically.”
