Missouri Weather Alert: Kansas City Braces for 40 mph Wind Gusts on Monday

Missouri begins Monday with a sharp edge, as chilly air and strong winds sweep throughout the Kansas City metro. Flags snap, naked trees sway, and the air seems raw before daylight.

A wind advisory is in effect for much of the Kansas City area until early Monday morning. Northwest winds around 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, continue to make travel hazardous. Temperatures hold at 16 degrees, but wind chills fall into the single digits, briefly reaching near zero.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, the heaviest gusts will linger through the early commute before lessening later this morning. Loose debris may continue to blow around, and localized power outages are possible where branches fall.

Drivers on I-70, I-35, and I-435 should be prepared for unexpected crosswinds, particularly on elevated roads and open stretches. High-profile cars may struggle to maintain stability. Dress for the cold and leave additional time if you’re going out early.

By lunchtime, conditions have steadily improved as winds have died down and sunshine has returned. Monday’s highs will rise into the upper 20s, but it will remain brisk. Monday night becomes quieter and colder, with lows around 18 degrees.

The rest of the week will be more quiet and pleasant. Tuesday’s highs will reach the low 40s, with increasing clouds. Wednesday promises sunshine and highs in the mid-40s. New Year’s Day 2026 appears to be dry and seasonable, which is ideal for holiday travel and outdoor activities.

Despite the warming trend, persistent cold mornings raise concerns about refreezing on untreated roads. Stay alert on early travels as winter holds on until the end of the year.
