National Hurricane Center Places Four States on High Alert

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is keeping a close watch on several U.S. states this weekend due to a tropical development near the Gulf of America.

Earlier this week, the East Coast saw warnings for dangerous rip currents, while the National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and other areas.

The latest concern involves a low-pressure system near the Bahamas, which is expected to move northwest over the coming days. States likely to be affected include:

  • Alabama

  • Florida

  • Louisiana

  • Mississippi

According to a report from Gulf Coast News:

“This disturbance is not expected to develop due to strong upper-level winds; however, it will still increase rain coverage for south Florida this weekend. Expect scattered storms both afternoons for the Gulf Coast, but neither day will be a washout. Coverage will be higher along the Atlantic coast, where minor flooding is possible. As of 2 p.m. Friday, the National Hurricane Center keeps the odds of this system becoming an organized tropical system low, with two-day development chances at 10%.”

The National Weather Service recommends residents take hurricane safety precautions:

  • Check if you live in a hurricane evacuation area through your local government or emergency management office.

  • Assemble an emergency kit.

  • Review or write your family emergency plan.

  • Confirm your insurance policies are up to date.

Stay alert and take steps to remain safe as this system moves closer to the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
