National Weather Service issues ‘Severe T-Storm Warning’ for tonight

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning Monday for parts of the United States.

September 22 marks the first official day of fall, and it could be a rough one in several states. Forecasters expect strong thunder and lightning, heavy rain, damaging winds, large hail, and even a chance of tornadoes in some areas.

Three states are especially at risk Monday evening:

Ohio
Kentucky
Indiana

“A slight risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon across the Tri-State. Multiple clusters could develop and strengthen through the afternoon as they spread northeastward. Expect locally heavy rain, lightning, and damaging wind gusts with some clusters,” meteorologist Jennifer Ketchmark wrote.

Here’s how to stay safe when severe weather strikes:

Stay Weather Ready: Keep listening to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio for updates on severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.

At Home: Move to your secure location if you hear a severe thunderstorm warning. Damaging wind or large hail may be approaching. Take pets with you if time allows.

At Work or School: Stay away from windows during a severe thunderstorm warning. Avoid large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums.

Outside: Get inside a sturdy building immediately if severe thunderstorms are approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Never take shelter under a tree — it may fall or attract lightning.

In a Vehicle: Being inside a vehicle is safer than staying outdoors, but drive to the closest secure shelter if time permits.

Our thoughts are with everyone in these states tonight.
