CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Community leaders in the Champaign-Urbana area gathered on Thursday to learn about proposed legislation that would change who pays for firearm injury costs.
Mayors, police chiefs and other officials listened to an overview of the Responsibility In Firearms Legislation Act, or RIFL. Experts said firearm-related injuries cost the public in Illinois between $18 and $20 billion every year. The new act would shift those expenses onto gun manufacturers instead.

“Not only does it stand to save us all significant amount of money — both taxpayers and the state of Illinois — but it also creates an incentive for the firearm industry to participate meaningfully in our effort to reduce gun violence so that people can enjoy using their guns responsibly,” said SAFE CEO Sara Knizhnik.
The bill is currently moving through both the House and Senate.
