New Mexico Weather Alert: Albuquerque Faces Strong Winds, Snow, And Freezing Temperatures Through Friday Night

A pair of winter storms will bring snow, strong winds, and the coldest air of the season to New Mexico through Friday, increasing concerns about hazardous travel and dangerously low temperatures, particularly overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, rain and snow showers will begin Wednesday and continue intermittently until Friday, with colder and snowier weather becoming more likely Thursday night. Northern and western New Mexico are predicted to have the most consistent snowfall, while central locations, including Albuquerque, may see modest accumulations as temperatures drop.

Snowfall levels remain uncertain, but the most likely scenario is for 1 to 3 inches across northern and central New Mexico, with higher totals possible if colder air arrives sooner. Gusty winds on Thursday and Friday may cause blowing snow and impaired visibility, especially in northeast New Mexico and along east-central roadways.

Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph could cause hazardous crosswinds on north-south routes Thursday, while reduced vision in open places due to blowing snow is becoming a growing problem Friday morning. By Friday night, a surge of Arctic air will cause temperatures to plummet, with single-digit lows anticipated in much of northern New Mexico and teens common further south. Some valleys may drop to or below zero.

Residents should safeguard pipes, plants, and pets, secure unsecured outside goods, and plan for difficult travel. The National Weather Service says more advisories may be issued as confidence in snowfall coverage and wind impacts grows through the remainder of the week.
