New York Weather Alert: Black Ice Risk Tonight Through Monday Morning

Drivers across New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and other portions of the tri-state area should exercise caution tonight and early Monday, as black ice conditions may develop on roadways, particularly bridges and overpasses.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, black ice is difficult to notice and forms quickly when temperatures are near or below freezing. Forecasters warn that untreated surfaces may turn extremely slippery, resulting in dangerous driving conditions during the Monday morning commute.

The risk is highest on elevated routes, such as bridges, ramps, and overpasses, which freeze faster than the surrounding pavement. Even if the roads appear to be damp and not frozen, drivers may face ice patches.

The National Weather Service recommends travelers to slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid rapid braking or fast turns. Officials also urge allocating extra driving time and staying vigilant for changing road conditions, particularly in shaded or less-traveled regions.

Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on sidewalks, steps, and pathways, since black ice can be equally treacherous and cause slips and falls.

Transportation authorities around the region are monitoring circumstances, and drivers are advised to check local traffic and weather updates before leaving. Even slight temperature fluctuations overnight can have a huge impact on road safety.

Conditions are forecast to improve gradually after sunrise on Monday as temperatures rise, but slick spots may persist in shady areas.
