North Carolina Father Mourns Son Found Dead in Trunk with Three Half-Siblings

The father of a North Carolina teen allegedly killed along with his three half-siblings by their stepfather is speaking out in heartbreak after years of being unable to see his son.

“I never would have thought this would happen,” the father of 18-year-old Sean Brasfield told WTVD, asking to remain anonymous. “I know there are a lot of eyes on Sean, but there are three other innocent children who died.”

In an interview with The News & Observer, he said he was “in total shock.” His son, who had cerebral palsy and was blind in one eye, was described as “a great kid.”

Tragic Discovery

Authorities discovered Sean and his three half-siblings inside the trunk of a car on Monday, Oct. 27, after a 911 call allegedly made by Wellington Delano Dickens III, 38 — Sean’s stepfather.

According to a statement from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Dickens reportedly told dispatchers that he had killed his children.

Sheriff Steve Bizzell said Dickens’ 6-year-old child was allegedly killed in May, his 9-year-old in August, and his 10-year-old sometime between August and September. Sean was allegedly killed in September, according to The News & Observer.

A 3-year-old boy was found alive inside the family’s Zebulon home, authorities confirmed.

Family Cut Off for Years

Court filings show that Sean’s mother, Stephanie Rae Jones Dickens, died in April 2024. Her obituary stated that she and Dickens were married in August 2015.

Sean’s father said that after Stephanie began dating Dickens, he and other relatives were cut off from contacting Sean. “I haven’t seen my son since around 2014,” he told WTVD.

Charges Filed

Dickens now faces four counts of murder and is being held without bond at the Johnston County Jail. His attorney has not yet commented on the case.
