Ohio State Trooper Killed While Assisting Disabled Vehicle

CANFIELD, Ohio – An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was killed Thursday while assisting a disabled vehicle in Canfield, Mahoning County.

Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton was in his cruiser on State Route 11 South when a semi-truck struck his vehicle, pushing it into the disabled commercial vehicle he was helping. The driver of the disabled vehicle, who was standing outside at the time, was also hit and flown to a local hospital. His condition has not been immediately reported. The 35-year-old truck driver involved was not injured.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent Colonel Charles A. Jones called the incident a tragedy. “Today, the Patrol lost a member of our family. This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Department of Public Safety,” he said, offering condolences to the Cayton family.

The crash occurred around noon Thursday and is under investigation.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine described Cayton’s death as a “heartbreaking loss for his family, OSHP, and all Ohioans,” and extended condolences on social media. DeWine has also ordered flags across Ohio to be flown at half-staff in memory of Trooper Cayton.
