Pittsburgh Weather Warning: Cold Snap and Freeze Risk at 23° This January 2026

Pennsylvania wakes to a hard winter edge this morning, with steel-gray skies and cold air pressing across western valleys. As the region begins the first full week of 2026, breathing fogs up swiftly, and the pavement feels brittle underfoot.

According to the National Weather Service, Pittsburgh began the morning with temperatures about 23 degrees, gloomy skies, and mild breezes. Wind chills fall into the teens, keeping conditions cold early. The skies improve later, allowing for partial sun and highs approaching freezing by the afternoon.

Drivers throughout Allegheny County should use caution in the early morning hours. I-376, I-279, and neighborhood side streets may have icy patches where moisture has frozen overnight. Flash freezing is still likely in shaded places, especially around bridges and river crossings. Allow for additional time and slow down early.

Conditions quickly alter as we approach Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will rise to the low 40s on Monday before peaking near 50 degrees on Tuesday. Rain falls as the weather warms up. Tuesday afternoon brings light rain, which increases in likelihood by the evening. While snow is not predicted, damp roads and lingering chilly ground may cause treacherous areas after nightfall.

By Wednesday, clouds will linger, with highs in the upper 40s. As temperatures rise into the mid-50s, another bout of rain is possible later this week. To be fair, winter temporarily loosens its grip, but the pattern persists.

Meteorologists are also predicting a return to more conventional winter conditions farther west. Between January 17 and January 30, heavy snow is forecast to fall in the Great Lakes region. Western Pennsylvania may experience more frequent rain and temperature fluctuations rather than continuous snowfall.

Winter weather necessitates immediate attention, followed by adaptability. Dress for a cold start and expect for damp journeys. How slippery did the roads feel where you traveled this morning?
