Police: Miami Man Shot Acquaintance Over $40 Debt in Liberty City

MIAMI — A dispute over a $40 phone bill ended in gunfire last week when a man was shot multiple times in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, according to police.

Steven Green, 56, was arrested Saturday and charged with attempted murder and other offenses in connection with the shooting, which occurred just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Biscayne Court Apartments, located at 5211 NW 17th Ave.

Investigators said the victim told detectives he encountered Green — whom he knows by the nickname “Blackey” — outside a nearby liquor store and confronted him about the unpaid debt. The two later moved to a stairwell inside the apartment complex, where the confrontation escalated.

According to the arrest report, Green pulled out a gun. The victim reportedly asked, “What, are you going to shoot me?” before Green opened fire, hitting him six times in the abdomen before fleeing the scene.

Police located Green on Saturday evening. During questioning, Green claimed the victim had tried to rob him after asking to charge his phone and allegedly pulled a knife. Investigators said Green’s story shifted several times — first saying he gave the victim money, then later claiming he didn’t because he had “nothing to give.”

Detectives said Green admitted to being at the scene but denied the shooting.

As of Monday, he remains held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on four charges, including attempted murder.
