A strong frontal system is forecast to pass across Portland and parts of northwest Oregon on Monday, bringing with it gusty and perhaps damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, Monday, December 15, will bring higher winds to western Oregon and southwest Washington. A Wind Advisory is in force for the Coast Range and Willapa Hills, where wind gusts may reach 45 mph or higher. While Portland may experience significantly lower peak gusts, severe winds are forecast throughout the metro region.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds combined with saturated soils may raise the chance of fallen trees and localized power outages, particularly in the afternoon and evening on Monday. Recent rains have softened soils, making trees more vulnerable to uprooting when winds pick up.
In the Portland region, continuous winds of 20 to 30 mph are probable, with gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph, particularly in exposed areas and at higher elevations. The heaviest winds are forecast to hit the coast and the foothills.
Residents are encouraged to secure any loose outside items, such as holiday decorations, trash cans, and patio furniture. Drivers should use caution, particularly on bridges and highways where sudden gusts may impact high-profile vehicles.
Utility companies advise households to be prepared for brief power disruptions, especially in wind-prone areas. Charging mobile gadgets ahead of time and having flashlights on hand is recommended.
The National Weather Service predicts that conditions will progressively improve from late Monday night into Tuesday as the frontal system passes east. However, further weather systems are likely later this week, keeping the outlook lively.
