SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) — A strong solar storm is currently striking Earth, producing Northern Lights visible across much of the United States, even as far south as northern Florida, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).
The storm, caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, has been upgraded to a G4 level — the fourth-highest on NOAA’s five-level space weather scale.
Experts say the event may cause major disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field, fluctuating between lower and severe storm conditions throughout its duration.
The most intense activity is expected early Wednesday, though the storm could continue through Friday.
NOAA warns the geomagnetic storm could affect technology, including satellite operations, navigation systems, and power grids. The agency advises taking precautionary measures to mitigate potential impacts.
Meanwhile, skywatchers across the U.S. are being treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, with vibrant colors illuminating the night sky from the Midwest to the Southeast.
