SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Nearly a month after the tragic Montana helicopter crash that killed Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey’s son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary findings.
The crash occurred on Oct. 22 as Zach Bailey, his wife, Kelsey, and their children, Vada Rose and Samuel, departed a private ranch in a Robinson R44 helicopter. Their 10-year-old son, Finn, was not on board.
According to the NTSB, the helicopter was flying toward Ekalaka Airport in southeastern Montana alongside a plane. The plane’s pilot reported losing sight of the R44 during the flight.
While the helicopter was out of view, a ground witness reported seeing something fall from the aircraft as it descended, then appeared to climb again.
Debris was found scattered across a wide area of open field, and officials noted there was no fire or explosion. Early findings suggest a possible in-flight structural or component failure at low altitude.
As the investigation continues, Darren Bailey said he will remain in the Illinois governor’s race.
“The last two weeks have been some of the hardest days of our lives. But your prayers, your messages, and your love have carried us,” Bailey said earlier. “After a lot of prayer and reflection, Cindy and I have decided we’re staying in this race, Governor.”
Illinois’ primary election is scheduled for March 17, 2026.
