Quiet and chilly tonight, unsettled weather ahead

PEORIA (25News Now) – Central Illinois is in for a calm but cold night. With mostly clear skies and light winds, temperatures will drop quickly after sunset. Most spots will start Monday morning in the upper 20s to low 30s.

More clouds Monday, rain arrives late
Monday will begin dry, but clouds will gradually increase as the next weather system moves in from the Plains. Afternoon highs will reach the low to mid-50s, which is typical for this time of year.

By Monday night, warmer, moisture-filled air spreads in, bringing widespread rain. Thanks to the clouds and incoming showers, temperatures won’t fall much overnight, holding in the 40s.

A few rumbles of thunder possible
Late Monday night into early Tuesday, there may be just enough instability for a few thunderstorms, mainly near and south of I-72. Severe weather isn’t expected, though a couple of rumbles of thunder can’t be ruled out.

Midweek warm-up
High pressure builds in midweek, bringing quieter weather. Sunshine returns and southerly winds help boost temperatures into the 60s.

Another storm late week
A potentially stronger storm system is expected to move in late in the week. While there’s still uncertainty about the exact track and rainfall amounts, most forecast models suggest central Illinois will see another round of rain—and possibly a few thunderstorms.
