Record-Breaking Cold and Snow Grip the East in Early Winter Blast

A powerful blast of arctic air and snow swept across the eastern United States from Monday into Tuesday, shattering November temperature records and blanketing fall foliage under a sudden coat of white.

AccuWeather National Reporter Leslie Hudson reported from a farm in Monticello, Florida, near the Georgia border, where frost covered the ground Tuesday morning. Farmers worked overnight to protect mandarin orange crops using sprinklers and other equipment against the freeze.

Temperatures plunged into the teens across Alabama and Georgia, while readings in Florida and Mississippi dropped into the 20s. Two Florida locations—Blackwater Reservoir and Eddy Tower—registered lows of 24°F, while Mount Mitchell, North Carolina, and Mount Leconte, Tennessee, hit 3°F. Snowshoe, West Virginia, dropped to 10°F, and Hot Springs, Virginia, fell to 13°F.

In Orlando, temperatures dipped to 36°F, the city’s coldest November morning since 1981. The chill stunned wildlife in central Florida, with iguanas falling from trees, and more than two dozen record lows were set across the Southeast.

Heavy Snowfall Blankets Midwest and Northeast

Residents around the Great Lakes and Northeast faced their first major snow accumulation of the season, as heavy lake-effect snow buried communities.

  • Negaunee, Michigan: 18 inches

  • Walkerton, Indiana: 14 inches

  • Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin: 13 inches

  • Davis, West Virginia: 13 inches

The 48-hour snowfall totals through Tuesday morning surpassed a foot in several spots, leading to numerous accidents and travel disruptions throughout the Midwest.

Even Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, saw snowflakes Monday—the earliest on record, breaking the previous record from Nov. 12, 2013.

Daily snowfall records were also broken in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, marking an early and intense start to the winter season for much of the country.
