Rock Island man sentenced to prison on machine gun charges

A Rock Island man will spend several years in federal prison for illegally possessing a machine gun.

Juwan Attron Johnson, 28, also known as “Chubbs,” received a 48-month federal prison sentence for possessing a machine gun conversion device, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa. Because of a prior felony conviction — a 2017 voluntary manslaughter case — Johnson is also barred from owning firearms or ammunition.

Once he completes his prison term, Johnson must serve two years of supervised release.

Court documents say the conversion device Johnson had, often called a “switch,” is used to turn a semi-automatic firearm into a fully automatic weapon capable of firing multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger. Under federal law, these devices are classified as machine guns and are illegal to possess.
