Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Hail Possible in Mississippi This Week

After a stretch of dry weather, Mississippi could see thunderstorms and severe weather later this week as a cold front moves into the region.

“We’ve got a cold front that’s pushing in the area this weekend,” said Eric Carpenter, senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson. “As we get later into the fall and cooler weather, there’s greater potential for cold fronts and stronger storms capable of producing severe weather.”

The main threats from the system include damaging winds and hail up to the size of quarters. Carpenter noted that the tornado risk is low for most areas.

The system is expected to impact Mississippi from Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. Areas from Southwest to Northeast Mississippi, including the Jackson region, could see isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds. A band stretching from Vicksburg northeast to Eupora and north carries a higher risk, with wind gusts up to 60 mph and severe storms possible.

Forecasters said confidence in the forecast is low this far in advance and conditions may change, but residents should stay alert.

“We haven’t had much rain lately, so storms could catch people off-guard,” Carpenter said. “We want people to be aware of the potential.”
