Illinois Drivers Warned: Slow-Moving Farm Equipment on Roads This Week

Springfield, IL – Illinois State Police are warning drivers to use extra caution when they encounter slow-moving farm equipment on the roads this week.

Vehicles with the triangular orange “Slow-Moving Vehicle” emblem travel at reduced speeds and need special care from motorists. With harvest season underway, farmers are moving equipment more frequently between fields and highways.

Authorities urge drivers to stay alert, slow down when they see flashing amber lights, and pass only with extreme caution. Motorists should leave extra space behind tractors or combines and never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of an intersection.

“Patience is critical,” police said. “Farmers can’t always move over to let motorists pass safely.” They also reminded drivers that if they can’t see the farmer operating the machinery, the farmer probably can’t see them either because of blocked rear visibility.

These reminders come as rural traffic accidents often rise during harvest season when heavy farm equipment shares the road with commuters. Police say cautious driving can prevent serious collisions this fall.
