Blustery cold, first accumulating snow of the season expected for Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut

Many communities across southern New England could see their first measurable snowfall of the season this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, blustery and cold conditions will continue today. Winds are expected to ease tonight and Saturday, though temperatures will remain cold.

A fast-moving low-pressure system moving in Saturday night into Sunday could bring a few inches of snow to areas south of Interstate 90, while locations north of I-90 are more likely to see just a dusting to 1 inch. Most of the snowfall is expected late Saturday night into Sunday morning, though ocean-effect snow showers could linger across the Cape and Nantucket into Sunday evening.

Behind the system, a surge of arctic air is expected Sunday night into Monday, with wind chills ranging from about 5 below zero to 10 above.

Forecasters note that the storm track could still shift north or south, meaning snow totals may change.

Cold conditions are expected to persist into Tuesday. However, a shift in the weather pattern could bring much milder temperatures by midweek, with highs climbing significantly on Wednesday and potentially reaching the 50s in some areas by Thursday.
