Snow, rain move into Central Illinois Saturday, cooler air to follow

A fast-moving weather system is set to bring a brief round of snow to Central Illinois on Saturday, with additional snow showers possible later in the day.

Showers will spread into the region late tonight, starting as rain west of the Illinois River after 3 a.m. The precipitation is expected to mix with snow and change fully to snow between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Once the transition happens, a one- to two-hour burst of moderate snow could develop through around 9 a.m., producing a quick coating of snow—generally up to one inch—mainly on grassy areas and elevated surfaces.

As the morning snow moves out, most accumulations should melt by early afternoon as temperatures climb into the upper 30s. However, another cold front is forecast to arrive Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing gusty snow showers and possible snow squalls that could create slick road conditions Saturday night.

Behind these passing fronts, Central Illinois will see seasonably cool temperatures through the rest of the weekend. Temperatures are expected to moderate early next week, with Tuesday shaping up to be the warmest day as highs reach the upper 40s ahead of another cold front.

That system will kick off a series of fronts likely to bring longer stretches of near- to below-average temperatures, along with additional chances for snow across the region.
