SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Police arrested two suspects connected to a break-in on Acushnet Avenue after officers responded to a shooting in the area.
Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh said officers were called around 4 p.m. Tuesday to Main and Union Streets for a report of a gunshot victim. When they arrived, they found a juvenile boy on the 100 block of William Street with minor injuries.
The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center and is expected to recover. Investigators believe the shooting began with a fight near Main and Winthrop Streets. Officers learned that several individuals were seen fleeing and running into a home on Acushnet Avenue.
Members of the Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit received permission to search the multi-family home where the suspects were reportedly hiding. They found two individuals in the basement, later identified as 21-year-old Roberto Mercado of Holyoke and 24-year-old Christopher Cruz of Springfield.
Police arrested both suspects, as neither lived at the home. Cruz also had two outstanding arrest warrants. Neither suspect has been charged in connection with the shooting at this time.
