A 23-year-old man who was seriously injured in a crash while fleeing from Miami-Dade deputies is now in custody after being released from the hospital.
Deputies arrested Kevin Alvarez on Tuesday in Miami-Dade County. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or eluding after an accident, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.
The incident happened on September 10 near Southwest 87th Avenue and 50th Street in the Olympia Heights neighborhood. Deputies said Alvarez’s car was stopped in the road, and when they tried to approach, he hit a deputy’s vehicle while speeding off.
Although a sergeant ordered deputies to end the pursuit, Alvarez soon lost control and crashed into a tree. Surveillance footage showed the collision and deputies rushing to help him. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
After recovering from his injuries, Alvarez was booked into jail and appeared before a Miami-Dade judge on Wednesday. His bond was set at $30,800, and he remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
