Tallahassee Weather Alert: Wind Chills to Drop to 17–24° Tuesday Morning

A sharp blast of winter weather is approaching North Florida as a powerful cold front sweeps through the region, causing the National Weather Service in Tallahassee to issue a Cold Weather Advisory from late tonight until Tuesday morning.

Forecasters predict dangerously cold wind chills of 17 to 24 degrees in Tallahassee and nearby inland areas from 3 to 10 a.m. Tuesday. While air temperatures will drop into the upper 20s, strong north winds will make it seem much colder, particularly during the early morning commute.

According to the most recent wind chill forecast, Tallahassee will reach a low of 27 degrees, but winds will push “feels-like” temperatures into the mid-20s, with colder readings likely in neighboring rural areas. Wind chills as low as 17 degrees are possible farther inland in southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia.

Forecasters describe this abrupt cold blast as a temperature “whiplash” occurrence, coming after a long period of pleasant weather. The chilly air follows a powerful cold front that moves quickly throughout the Southeast, bringing clear skies but reinforcing cold, dry air overnight.

Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, minimize their time outside during the coldest hours, and keep an eye on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, unhoused populations, and pets. Residents are also reminded to observe fire safety when using space heaters or other alternative heating sources.

The frigid weather will continue through Tuesday morning, but sunlight is forecast later in the day. Winds will gradually ease by Tuesday afternoon, allowing temperatures to recover marginally, however cold weather will persist into midweek.
