Anna Kepner, an 18-year-old, was presumed dead on November 7 at 11:17 on the Carnival cruise ship. Kepner, a cheerleader from Florida, was described as bubbly, outgoing, and reliable — someone who always stayed true to herself, according to her obituary. Her grandparents said she had her entire future ahead of her. They shared that she was an independent young woman on track to graduate high school in May and then enlist in the Navy. All those dreams ended when she was found dead on the cruise.
The suspect in her murder is Anna’s 16-year-old stepbrother. He was reportedly obsessed with her despite being part of her newly blended family. Her ex-boyfriend’s father once witnessed the stepbrother lying on top of her while she slept, according to what he reported.
As reported by the New York Post, “She was scared of him because he always carried around a big knife,” the father claimed in an interview that aired Thursday.
At the time of her death, Kepner was found under the cruise ship bed, wrapped in a blanket and covered with life vests. She died from mechanical asphyxiation.
Mechanical asphyxiation is a form of death caused by a physical obstruction or external force that prevents breathing. It can happen through choking, strangulation, pressure on the chest or neck, or an object blocking the airway. This force restricts the lungs from expanding or stops air from flowing.
Anna Kepner attended the cruise with her father, Jeffery Kepner; her stepmother, Shauntel Hudson Kepner; two stepsiblings; and her grandparents.
