A 13-year-old girl was rescued from the Mahoning River early Wednesday morning after slipping off the Peanut Bridge, authorities said.
According to Youngstown police and Fire Department Battalion Chief John Lightly, the girl was walking downtown along the bridge around midnight when her hat blew off. She slipped while trying to catch it and fell into the river.
A passerby heard her screams and alerted emergency responders. Firefighters arrived to find two people holding the teen at the riverbank.
Using a Stokes basket and a ladder, crews lifted her over a snow embankment to safety. The rescue took about 10 minutes.
She was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.
