Thompson Announces $355K Grant to Boost HAZMAT Training in Mississippi

BOLTON, Miss. (WLBT) — Congressman Bennie G. Thompson has announced a $355,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to enhance HAZMAT training and emergency preparedness for Mississippi’s first responders.

The funding comes through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and is designed to strengthen pipeline safety, emergency response readiness, and damage prevention efforts across the state.

According to a Monday morning news release, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will receive $332,009 through the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant Program. The grant will fund at least 178 HAZMAT responder trainings, allowing first responders to attend specialized courses and conferences.

Congressman Thompson called the grant a major win for Mississippi, emphasizing its importance in protecting underground infrastructure and improving safety.

“These federal investments will help strengthen our state’s emergency response capabilities, expand training for first responders, and enhance public awareness of safe digging practices,” Thompson said. “I am proud to support these critical efforts to keep Mississippi families safe.”

Additionally, the Mississippi Public Service Commission will receive $23,357 to hire an attorney experienced in damage prevention law and to promote the ‘Call Before You Dig’ campaign through educational initiatives.

Officials say this effort will help reduce the risk of damaging underground utilities, ensuring stronger protection for both communities and vital infrastructure statewide.
