Three Members of Notorious Whittaker Family Taken Into State Care in West Virginia

(NewsNation) — Three members of America’s so-called “most inbred” family — Ray Whittaker, Lorene Whittaker, and Timmy Whittaker — have been removed from their home in Raleigh County, West Virginia, and placed into state care, according to The Daily Mail.

Family Members Relocated

Betty Whittaker confirmed the three were moved to alternative housing in September. The family had been living on a deteriorating homestead that included a small four-room house with a metal addition, three trailers, and an outhouse.

“I’ve been staying at home, waiting on a phone call, but that’s all I know,” said Larry Whittaker. “They haven’t called or let me know nothing. They won’t tell us where they at.”

Viral Fame and Controversy

Ray, Lorene, and Timmy suffer from significant physical and mental disabilities. The Whittakers gained viral fame five years ago after a YouTube documentary highlighted their isolated lifestyle and struggles in rural Appalachia.

Larry Whittaker blamed viral videos and online exploitation for the family’s current situation, claiming the exposure led to government intervention.
“There’s too much sh— out there, they’re watching,” he said. “People out there are making money off them, and they don’t like it. [Adult Protective Services] told us don’t talk to nobody.”

Protective Order and Ongoing Investigation

The trio’s removal reportedly came shortly after a protective court order against Betty Jo “BJ” Whittaker Rocha, Larry’s daughter, was dropped. Rocha had been living at the Whittaker home before the intervention.

State officials have not released details about Ray, Lorene, or Timmy’s cases, citing confidentiality laws.

Family Background

The Whittaker family’s lineage reportedly began with identical twin brothers whose children married each other, leading to 15 offspring and generations of severe inbreeding that resulted in developmental and genetic complications.

Authorities have not commented on whether the removals were related to health, safety, or welfare concerns.
