A truck driver who had a lit Christmas candle burning inside his cab blew just under the legal blood alcohol limit during a routine traffic stop in British Columbia last week.
The stop happened Thursday morning, December 4th, in Fruitvale, British Columbia, Canada.
Fraser Valley Today reported that the 52-year-old truck driver was first pulled over for speeding. But when the officer approached the cab, he spotted a lit Christmas candle beside the driver and also noticed an open alcohol container.
“It’s possible that the driver is very fond of Christmas candles,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said in a statement. “It’s also possible that he was trying to mask the odor of liquor.”
The driver completed a mandatory roadside alcohol screening — something Canadian authorities say can be required of “any driver, any time.” He blew a “warn,” meaning he wasn’t over the criminal limit but still had enough alcohol in his system to trigger penalties.
Officers issued a three-day immediate driving prohibition, a $230 ticket for having an open liquor container, and a $138 ticket for driving just over 9 mph above the speed limit. The truck, which belonged to his employer, was also impounded for three days.
