TUPELO, Miss. — A Tupelo woman discovered one morning that her SNAP benefits deposit had been stolen.
Ladora Triplett said she received her benefits deposit of about $700 at midnight, only to find the money gone within an hour. Her transaction history showed the funds were used in various locations across the country.
“When this first happened, I cried for a long time because this is how I feed my kids,” Triplett said. “I was going to get them some lunch for school for the week, and I just couldn’t even do that. I just have to make do with what we have.”
This type of fraud has become increasingly common nationwide, and Triplett noted she has seen others share similar experiences online.
She contacted the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) for assistance but was told she cannot be reimbursed.
Triplett expressed frustration with the state, saying, “Within seconds, fraudulent activity like that should be picked up and blocked. I feel like Mississippi is not doing what they should do. They should have been on top of this. This should be a priority. These are government-issued benefits. Why are you not making sure we have the security to lock our cards and block out-of-state transactions if we’re not the ones using them?”
The MDHS announced that reports of stolen SNAP benefits have risen in Tupelo and northeast Mississippi over the past week.
