NIGERIA — Beloved TV presenter Somtochukwu “Sommie” Christelle Maduagwu, 29, tragically died on Monday, September 29, after jumping from the third floor of her apartment while attempting to escape armed robbers at her home.
Police discovered Somtochukwu unconscious and rushed her to Maitama General Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. A special investigation unit has been launched to track down the suspects.

We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Sommie’s voice may now be silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure.”
Online, fans and colleagues expressed grief and shock at her death. Many prayed for her soul and for her family’s healing. Some raised concerns about hospital and police responses, though Ajao Adewale, FCT Commissioner of Police, clarified that security was in place and hospital care was administered promptly.
According to Adewale, armed robbers gained access to Unique Apartment, a three-story building with 18 flats in Katampe. One security guard was shot while confronting the intruders, creating a chaotic and panic-inducing situation. Somtochukwu, who lived on the top floor, panicked and jumped from the window.
She had made a distress call to police during the robbery. Officers arrived to find her unconscious, and she was immediately taken to the hospital.
Somtochukwu was a qualified lawyer, having studied in the UK before returning to Nigeria to serve in the military. She later worked as a legal executive and junior counsel before joining ARISE News, where she reported on legal issues, women’s rights, and gender equality advocacy.
Her untimely death has prompted an outpouring of tributes and a nationwide call for justice.
