Two Illinois airports cutting flights amid government shutdown

Travelers across the U.S. are facing growing frustrations as the government shutdown continues to slow airport operations — from TSA lines to boarding delays — with two major Illinois airports now forced to cut flights.

Air traffic controllers, among those most affected, have been working without pay since the shutdown began. Many are clocking mandatory overtime six days a week, struggling to balance one of the most high-pressure jobs in the world while worrying about their own bills. Some even report difficulty affording transportation to work.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), flights in “high-volume markets” nationwide will be reduced by up to 10%, including major airports such as Los Angeles, New York, and Fort Lauderdale. Reductions will begin at 4% on Friday, gradually increasing to 10%, affecting flights scheduled between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The travel chaos is already evident, with passengers frustrated by long waits and airline staff stretched thin. Aviation unions, major airlines, and travel organizations are urging Congress to end the shutdown, calling it an “unnecessary strain on workers and passengers.”

Illinois travelers brace for delays

Both Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway Airport are among the 40 airports nationwide seeing major flight cuts this season. The FAA says it will consider various factors when finalizing reductions, including airlines that operate less-than-daily service at certain airports.

Frequent travelers should expect delays, arrive early for TSA screening, and prepare for possible cancellations.

Other airports facing similar reductions include:

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National

  • Denver International

  • Dallas/Fort Worth International

  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County

  • Newark Liberty International

Officials warn that the longer the shutdown continues, the worse the impact will be for both passengers and aviation workers.
