Unsettled weather brings scattered rain through the week

After scattered storms produced heavy rain for some Sunday afternoon, conditions quieted down quickly in the evening. Showers may still appear overnight, especially south of Rockford across Central Illinois. Areas that received heavy rain could also see patchy fog.

Monday will be mostly dry in the afternoon, with another chance for scattered showers and storms increasing after 5–6 p.m. Highs will climb into the upper 70s and near 80° in breaks of sunshine.

The unsettled pattern will continue through midweek as a slow-moving low-pressure system moves across the Central U.S. into the Ohio River Valley from Tuesday through Friday. This system will bring additional scattered showers and storms.

The exact path of the cutoff low will greatly affect local rainfall in Northern Illinois. A track farther south could allow drier air to move in, limiting rain coverage on Wednesday. If the low tracks overhead, scattered showers will peak between Wednesday and Thursday. Afternoon highs during these days will remain in the low 70s due to cloud cover and rain.

Forecast confidence for rain coverage Wednesday and Thursday is currently around 40% but could increase as the low’s track becomes clearer. Moisture will gradually move out by the end of the week, bringing drier conditions Friday into Saturday. Highs will rebound to the mid- to upper 70s by the weekend.
