Snow is tapping against windows across the Upper Peninsula this morning, pushed sideways by gusts from Lake Superior. In Marquette, the air is stinging, vision fades quickly during larger spurts, and winter travel plans are already under strain.
The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through early Monday. Mixed precipitation will turn to snow this evening, with totals of three to six inches forecast in Alger, Marquette, Dickinson, and Menominee counties. Snowfall rates might briefly exceed one inch per hour, significantly decreasing visibility.
Road conditions are anticipated to deteriorate rapidly. Major roads such as US-41 and M-28 may become snow-covered in the evening, with sloppy intersections and drifting snow frequent in open areas. Drivers may expect sudden slowdowns and reduced visibility, particularly after dark.
Snow continues till early Monday morning before tapering down. Winds are light to moderate, although even modest gusts might blow snow across untreated roads. Temperatures remain frigid, with lows near 19 and highs in the low 30s Monday. Fresh snow, mixed with chilly pavement, increases the chance of flash freezing as plows pass.
Conditions improved temporarily Monday afternoon. The skies become largely sunny, providing a break for cleanup work. The pause does not last long. By Tuesday, a new system will bring rain and snow, with isolated snow showers continuing into midweek. Winter maintains solid reign of the Upper Peninsula.
Looking ahead, meteorologists continue to examine late-January patterns that favor more lake-enhanced snowfall across the Great Lakes region. For the time being, this storm serves as the backdrop for the first full week of 2026.
If you’re going out, slow down, give additional time for travel, and keep emergency supplies on hand.
