Weather Alert for Nebraska-Iowa: Rain and Snow Possible, Freeze Expected by Thursday Night

Nebraska welcomes the morning with a clear sky and a brisk chill throughout the city. Frost sparkles on parked vehicles. The temperature eases slightly, but a quick December changeover brings wind, light precipitation, and a severe freeze to the Omaha area by Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will rise into the upper 40s and near 50 degrees by Wednesday with partial sunshine. The roads remain dry, and travel improves throughout Douglas County and western Iowa. That mild window will not last long.

Clouds increased Wednesday night as a weak system approached. There is a probability of rain, with a probable transition to rain and snow later. While accumulation appears to be moderate, wet pavement may have an impact on early commutes, particularly north and east of downtown.

Thursday becomes breezy. Northwest winds strengthen, with gusts exceeding 30 mph at times. Highs reach the low 40s, and temperatures drop swiftly after dark. Any remaining moisture may refreeze as temperatures fall into the mid-teens by late night.

This configuration raises worries about black ice. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated neighborhood roads can become slick with little warning. Drivers should slow down after dark, increase their following distance, and remain aware on I-80, I-680, and surface streets.

Friday remains cold but quieter, with sunshine returning and highs in the mid-40s. The weekend appears to be quieter overall, while the mornings remain frigid. Even without heavy snowfall, meteorologists believe this pattern indicates a classic early-winter handoff.

Residents should take advantage of the pleasant weather throughout the middle of the week to prepare for travel. In December, the weather on the Plains can change suddenly.

Five-Day Outlook for Omaha

  • Thursday: Breezy, high near 41

  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, high near 46
